Tattoos and body modification

Earlier in the module Mark said that he can't understand why people get tattoos. He didn't know why people would want to inject ink into their skin. However I understand why people do it, many people get closure from tattoos when something significant has happened in their life.

For example, my friend got a tattoo of his mother when she passed away and it gave him a lot of closure. This is a positive aspect of tattooing. A downside is societies views on them. An example of this is in the workplace. A person with a prominent tattoo i.e on their neck is probably unlikely to get a job ahead of a person without one, regardless of qualifications. Rapper 50 Cent recently announced that he is getting his tattoos removed "in a bid to be taken more seriously in the world of acting". Surely tattoos aren't a sign of acting ability? However, socities attitudes towards them have driven people to either get them removed or not get them at all. I personally have nothing against people who have tattoos and I may get one myself in the future.

  1. Fair play to your friend for getting that tattoo, those kind of tattoos with an actual message or reason behind them are perfectly reasonable, but some peoiple take it too far. For example getting their own name tattooed on themself. Whats the point?
